Lesson 4
Lab1: Movement across a cell membrane
a) We put some food coloring in a class of water and watched it diffuse.
b) Ice was put in the top of a new glass of water. Then food coloring was dropped. The food coloring sank very rapidly to the bottom and stayed there. It did not diffuse. Is this what happens under large areas of sea ice?
Then I removed the ice. The food coloring on the bottom started to diffuse. What do you think happens when large areas of sea ice melt? Gases like CO2 and CH4, bacteria and solid matter come to the surface to the surface?
Lab 2: Potato Lab
The day before class, I practiced this lab. The potato was supposed to shrink. It seemed like nothing happened after 20 minutes which was specified in the instructions. I left the samples overnight. In the morning I measured, and the salty sample had shrunk 1/16 of an inch.
Why did the potato not shrink? Does it have to a certain type of potato to work?
