Toastmasters Speech - Distribution of Wealth - Speech #6

Distribution of Wealth by Steven Levy

Copyright 2010, All rights reserved.

How bad is it?

Using data from Wealth, Income, and Power, by G. William Domhoff, Sociology Department, University of California, Santa Cruz
  • Wealthiest 20% own 85% of the assets
  • Since 2007, the median family in the US has lost 36% of their wealth, while the top 20% has lost only 11%
  • The concentration of wealth today is similar to what it was during the depression, about 1% owning 33% of the wealth
  • Of the western nations, the concentration of wealth is only exceeded by Switzerland with 71% for the top 10%, while ours is 70%. Bear in mind, that European countries have a better Safety net than the US. The concentration of wealth in the US would have more impact on the lower classes.

Another source is the Survey of Consumer Finances, sponsored by the Federal Reserve Board,  that does provide data from 1983.
  • The bottom 40% own 0.2% of the wealth
  • The next 40% own 15%
  • The top 20% own 85%

If 100 people were going to dinner according to their wealth, the top 20% would be going to a fine French restaurant, the next 40% would be going to McDonalds, and the bottom 40% would be going to the Quickie Mart for a 5 cent Tootsie Roll.

What is the impact?

  • Wealth can be used to shape the cultural and political environment through tax deductible donations
  • Ownership of stock gives voting rights and control of corporations
  • Influence leads to wealth, and more concentration
  • Since 1975 expenditure on criminal justice has gone from 33 to 216 billion dollars. We now imprison 25% of the worlds inmates.
  • All media is controlled by the very rich. For the past 30 years Americans have been bombarded with propaganda that is against their own self interest.
  • No new taxes, help the small business, Obama Care, Government cannot run health care efficiently.

What could be done? Three Ideas:

Redistribution of Wealth: Tax the Rich

  • Excise tax
  • Estate tax, taxation of special trusts
  • More progressive income and real estate taxes
  • No cap on payroll taxes
  • National VAT tax

Health Care: Shift from Cure to Prevention

  • Provide additional funds to state and local departments of public health. They have programs that address prevention and could be easily expanded.
  • Prohibit health insurance companies from selling anything but insurance. Do not let them sell a buying club. How expensive would your oil change be if Blue Cross paid for it?

Adult Education

  • Adults with better skills can obtain and improve their employment
  • Improved self-esteem
  • More demanding of their children’s school work and teachers
  • Examples
  • Better return on investment that educating children.

MediClerk: Medical Keyboarding, Typing and Transcribing

Chapter 1, Idea after reading.

Following consistent patterns might make it easier to electronically search records. Keeping the same titles for sections and the sequence in which information is recorded could help. Using phases that are widely accepted could also help in electronic search. Some providers have books of standard phrases they use to make records more consistent.

Algebra Rules and Formulas

PEMDAS: Order of Operations. Parenthesis, exponent, multiply, divide, add and subtract.

Commutative: a + b = b + a ; a x b = b x a
Associative: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c);  a(bc) = (ab)c
Distributive: a(b+c) = ab + bc
Identity: 0+ a = a; 1 x a = a
Inverse: a x 1/a = 1; a/b x b/a = 1
Negativity (Add): 1 - (-1) = 1 + 1
Negativity (Multiply): 1 x -1 = -1; -1 x -1 = 1
Zero: a/0 is undefined
Fractions: a/a = 1;

Adding Fractions: a/c + b/c = (a +b) / c
Multiplying Fractions: a/b x c/d = ac/bd
Exponents: a^0 = 1; a^1 = a; a^2 = a x a;  a^3 = a x a x a
Area, Rectangle: base x height

Area Triangle: 1/2 base x height
Volume of a box: length x width x height

Use Word to create text only resumes and documents

When you  apply for a job online you may have to copy and paste your resume, cover letter or references into a text only field. If you copy from a normal Word document, the result may not look very good.

The solution is to create a text only document. Follow these steps.
Step 1) Start MS Word.
Step 2) If you the document exists in Word format, open it. Otherwise create a new document.
Step 3) Click FILE, SAVE AS.
Step 4) Set FILE NAME = "Dave James Resume Nov 2 Text".
Step 5) Set SAVE AS TYPE = "Plane Text".
Step 6) Press ENTER.
Step 7) Close the document.
Step 8) Open the document. Observe how it looks.
Step 9) Open the document with the program, NOTEPAD, to check how it will look in a text only field. To open NOTEPAD, click on START, ALL PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, NOTEPAD.

Algebra: confusing notation issue resolved

a student was working on this problem:
(a^n means the a to the nth power)

Solve for x the following equation: 6^2 + 7^2 = x^2
The goal is to write a true statement that says x = n when n is numerical value like 3.4. The student did not know where to begin.

I reversed the statement to say: x^2 = 6^2 + 7^2 (if a = b, then b = a)
Now the student knew what to do:
x^2 = 36 + 49
x^2 = 85
x = +/-9.2

TCC Health Science Lesson 4 Lab Notes, October 30, 2010, Potato

Lesson 4
Lab1: Movement across a cell membrane
a) We put some food coloring in a class of water and watched it diffuse.

b) Ice was put in the top of a new glass of water. Then food coloring was dropped. The food coloring sank very rapidly to the bottom and stayed there. It did not diffuse. Is this what happens under large areas of sea ice?

Then I removed the ice. The food coloring on the bottom started to diffuse. What do you think happens when large areas of sea ice melt? Gases like CO2 and CH4, bacteria and solid matter come to the surface to the surface?

Lab 2: Potato Lab
The day before class, I practiced this lab. The potato was supposed to shrink. It seemed like nothing happened after 20 minutes which was specified in the instructions. I left the samples overnight. In the morning I measured, and the salty sample had shrunk 1/16 of an inch.

Why did the potato not shrink? Does it have to a certain type of potato to work?
